0 million housing starts per year for many years to come. 0 million housing starts. The need is there, the opportunities are with us, but we must be competitive to meet the demands of the affordable house. Our tools for survival are engineering and imagination to meet the challenges which I shall categorize as process technology, product evolution, and managerial behavior. Overviews Process Technology Process Controls and Molding: Currently, we operate sanitary-ware plants with no more than 35 process variables-some of which are very primitive.

Great amounts of materials and products are moved around potteries with little or no added value. All this is time-consuming and very wasteful of man-hours, with deterioration of product and, remember, with little or no added value. One makes money, or has the potential of making money, only when value is added to the system. The industry needs to increase sophistication of material-handling systems by working with the professional engineers in the materials industry instead of relying on dated ware buggies and manual labor to move products.
