After resting at Ferns, the invading force, now with the addition of a number of Leinstermen and Norse from Wexford – about 3,000 strong – launched an attack on Ossory that met with success despite a spirited defence. Successful expeditions were launched against Offelan and Omurethy (25). Another expedition into Ossory resulted in the defeat of MacGillapatrick at Achadh-ur.

In the latter part of the ninth century and the beginning of the tenth, the Viking threat receded for a time, those living in Ireland establishing their settlements and becoming less aggressive, while those outside concentrated their attentions elsewhere. In 914 a new phase of attack and consolidation began with the arrival in Waterford of a great fleet. For much of the century the Vikings ravaged the country and founded new settlements. In the second half of the century, however, the Dál Cais, an east Clare sect, began its rise to power, culminating in Brian Ború’s achievement of the high kingship in 1002.
