THE LOS ANGELES CRUSADE In 1949, a group called “Christ for Greater Los Angeles” invited the evangelist to their city for a series of rallies. ” With little press coverage and sparse crowds, the Canvas Cathedral hardly seemed promising. When Billy Graham came to Los Angeles, accompanied by Ruth, he already had an admirer waiting. William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper magnate, had followed Graham’s preaching with Youth for Christ.

He badgered Ruth about personal habits, suggesting over and over again certain foods she should eat and that she should get more exercise. At one point, he needled Ruth about the woman’s place in a relationship, saying she should search the Scriptures and pray until the path God intended had become clear and for her to let him know when she had decided to accept that place. After all, in the world of the rural North Carolina farm, a woman was there to be the gentle but submissive and largely invisible force in the family.

People who listened to his delivery sometimes felt as if they needed to take breaths for him. He was rousing and full of spirit, a dose of refreshing energy. With each new trip to the evangelist platform, Graham’s preaching developed and matured, resonating with increased power and authority. The British people, still living on food rations and just beginning the struggle to rebuild, profoundly moved Billy. On some occasions, he spoke in partially rebuilt churches so filled with fog rolling through their open spaces that he could not see all of the audience.
